Sometimes failure is just the beginning
All Lai has ever wanted is to become a priestess, like her mother and grandmother before her, in service to their beloved goddess. That’s before the unthinkable happens, and Lai fails the trials she has trained for her entire life. She makes the only choice she believes she can she runs away.
From her isolated desert homeland, Lai rides north to the colder, stranger kingdom of Alanum—a land where magic, and female warriors, are not commonplace. Here, she hears tales about a mountain city of women guardians and steel forgers, worshiping goddesses who sound very similar to Lai's own. Determined to learn more about these women, these Keepers of the Dawn, Lai travels onward to find their temple. She is determined to make up for her past failure, and will do whatever it takes to join their sacred order.
Falling in love with another initiate was not part of the plan.
Keeper of the Dawn is a tale of new beginnings, second chances, and the endurance of hope.
Keeper of the Dawn eBook Dianna Gunn
I liked where this story could have gone. Overall I thought it was pretty predictable, slowly paced, and anticlimactic. Lai seemed like she was going to be a much stronger female character from the way she was portrayed at the beginning of the story. Even after she failed at something that was life altering she had an attitude of perseverance and strength - up until she met the love interest. After the point in the story of meeting her, Tara seemed to be the only thing she got strength from and that kept her going and I think that really contradicts who she was in the beginning. She seems to digress more than she grows as the story goes. All in all I'd say it was a solid okay (even though it was one of the MOST anticlimactic books written). However, I don't like books that animals unnecessarily die, so for that reason I wish I wouldn't have bought this book outside of kindle unlimited.Product details

Keeper of the Dawn eBook Dianna Gunn Reviews
I enjoyed reading this coming of age story. I liked the characters and the journey that she took to find herself.
While I was hooked from the start, my interest began to wane toward the end. I still enjoyed it and I adore the f/f relationship. The main character is strong and likable.
I loved this book. I loved the characters, I loved the lore, I want to learn so much more about the world. That being said, the writing is pretty clunky. There are a number of scenes that are a bit short and rushed, like they were inserted to fill gaps. Some are unnecessary, some should have been expanded. The dialogue can be a little bit wooden as well. However, the story catches you enough that you don't even notice it for the most part. I would recommend reading this book.
I certainly enjoyed this book! And I had a hard time putting it down during the short time it took to read. Other reviewers have critiqued some of this books flaws, and I generally agree with them (rushed at times, a bit anticlimactic, etc.). Overall, though, I found the lore very interesting and was eager to learn more.
I originally found this book on a list of queer-woman-led books, so I was interested to see how that would play out. I didn't feel into the romance at all, though. I could have done without it. But! I am still grateful that books with lesbian relationships are being created, and that I have the pleasure of reading them )
A really strong start and a rushed finish left me with hope for stronger novels from this author in the future. This one, however, had awkward pacing in places and a final battle that was far too short to feel satisfying. Length wise, this could have easily been a novel, and felt like it had been truncated at the halfway point.
Full marks on the cover art though. It is gorgeous!
This was an engaging story. It's well-written, the characters are believable, the world-building is done well (and that's important for a fantasy novel), and the plot is cohesive. I was solidly hooked on the story from the first chapter. This book was definitely worth the money I paid for it.
*** MILD SPOILERS AHEAD ****
Where the story fails for me... just a little... is when the protagonist reaches her goal and becomes a Keeper of the Dawn. Right there, the tension bleeds out of the story a little. The plot is still focused, but it just isn't as interesting. I think that's because the antagonist of the story isn't a person, but rather the barriers that keep Lai from becoming a priestess. Once those barriers are surmounted, the rest of the story feels a bit superfluous. I mean, it's not extreme. I was still engaged in the Hero's Journey. But the lack of a well-developed antagonist hurts this book enough that I have to deduct a star. There is a "bad guy" in the story, but he needed to be more integral to the plot to give it tension.
Also, usually I'm not fond of dream sequences in a novel. I think authors cheat with those a little. But this book has several supernatural visions that enhance the plot and explain the fantasy background and they were done well and fun to read.
Anyway, my take on the story Well worth the price for either a or paperback. I will not hesitate to pay for another piece of writing by this author.
This novella provided a fascinating escape into an intriguing world, and the worldbuilding is easily where Gunn shines brightest. I could always picture exactly where I was in the story, but the different cultures and belief systems were what really stood out the most. They added depth to the world and created a rich environment for the characters to develop in, and it was this aspect of the story that drew me in and made me want to stay. I was fascinated by the religion Lai and her people follow, the goddesses they worship, the sacrifices they make to those goddesses, and the way their beliefs seem to permeate all the most important parts of their lives. I appreciated how it all came together in such a believable way and had a significant impact on the plot and characters.
Unfortunately, the depth of the world-building didn't quite carry over to the characters for me, and I found myself feeling detached from them, which made me feel a little detached from the plot and apathetic in regards to the conflict. I think part of that may have had to do with the fact that the story often seems to rush through large passages of time in order to get to the next important scene, but I felt like I never had a chance to take a breath and get to know some of these characters a little better. There were several places where I wished the author had spent a little more time showing us important things that were happening.
Despite this, Gunn is a strong writer and I still enjoyed the story. Lai's romance with Tara was well written, and I enjoyed seeing it develop, even though, as with other aspects of the story, I wished we could have seen a little more of that development. If you enjoy stories with rich settings and you're looking for a quick escape into a fascinating world, this is definitely worth a read.
(Also--check out that cover art! It's gorgeous!)
